Anthony Burgess is probably known mostly for his fantastic book A Clockwork Orange and its loosely adapted film counterpart. The Wanting Seed is similarly provocative with its handling of moral and political concepts.
In a distant dystopian future wrought with over population, homosexuality and self-sterilization have become government propagated concepts. The state of things sends homemaker Beatrice-Joanna into a panic when she becomes pregnant with twins and isn’t sure whether the father is her husband Tristram or his brother Derek, who poses as a homosexual to advance his career. Society begins to crumble under a veil of safety as cannibalism becomes increasingly popular and wars are fabricated in an effort to decrease the population.
Burgess continues to step on toes in his depiction of evil governments who mainpulate the moral majority to serve their greedy interest and create wars to stir up the people and send them to their deaths. Hard to believe he’s from England, he seems to understand America fine.
will you be offended? Only if it’s on a political or philosophical level. Not a lot of graphic content.
