It‘s massive 1,100+ page length scares a few readers away, and what a shame. It is easily among the best five books I have ever read, drifting back and fourth through two time periods, juggling dozens of incredibly fleshed out characters, complicated and surreal fantasy, stark and horrifying reality… It is quite a masterpiece. Among Stephen King’s legions of rabid fans, the mammoth novel is often considered one of his darkest and greatest.
A cosmic, timeless and malevolent entity hibernates beneath a rural town in Maine, arising every 25 years or so to periods of inexplicable horror and to feed on children. A shape-shifting creature, It’s form of choice to lure kids to their violent ends? A dancing clown.
The complexity of the narrative, unbelievable intricacies and outright mesmerizing storytelling are all good reasons to read this book. But i recommend it on the grounds that for well over a thousand pages i was completely captivated by the story, and scared to death. It was loosely adapted into a TV miniseries in 1990 that disappointed most fans of the book. Pre-production is currently underway for a big-screen adaptation.
will you be offended? certainly not for the squeamish or easily upset. graphic violence (often against children), profanity and sex are all included.
